Pilgrims, Afar and at Home
Today's blog features a breathtaking article written by Elaine Ayala of the San Antonio Express that highlights a few San Antonio native's experience with taking a pilgrimage this past year. The article is colorful, moving and emotional and as a reader, you really get quite the picture of what the pilgrimage was like for these individuals.
Barb Bikoff was featured in the article and she recently visited Israel this past summer as part of the Jewish Renaissance Project.
Ayala writes, "The highs and lows of the trip bonded them. It not only connected Bikoff to Israel but strengthened her commitment to her Jewish identity, culture and faith, she said."

Thanksgiving: A Jewish American Holiday
Looking back on the past weekend we found an interesting article published by the Jerusalem Post that stated that Thanksgiving is a holiday that is predominately celebrated by Jews. Despite the recent rise in antisemitism, the Jews of America have earned a seat at the table as Jews and as Americans.
"That
is a distinction worth recognizing. That is an accomplishment for
which we should be thankful. And so, we eat turkey, watch football and
then, in our own Jewish way, give thanks for our ability to belong in a
way our forefathers longed for but never achieved."

Great Pilgrimages of the World Converge on University Campus
According to Terry Lee Goodrich of Baptist News, each year, more than 330 million people around the world journey to
sacred places to perform acts of devotion, express faith or seek
enlightenment or healing.
From Oct. 1st to Dec. 31st 2016, visitors to Baylor University’s Mayborn
Museum Complex in Waco, Texas, will learn about those pilgrimages
through the exhibition National Geographic Sacred Journeys. The exhibit, created with National Geographic photography, recreates
places, spaces and events so visitors can observe, discuss and learn
about the history and beliefs behind spiritual travels around the world.
There are a few Jewish pilgrimage sights that have been replicated in this exhibit including The Western Wall of the Second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, Israel and the Caves in the bluffs along the Dead Sea in Qumran, Israel, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.
Philip Jenkins, professor of history in Baylor's Institute for Studies of Religion says, "Many Americans associate the idea of pilgrimage with the Middle
Ages, but in fact it is a huge reality in the present world, something
that affects literally billions of people,” said Philip Jenkins,
professor of history in Baylor’s Institute for Studies of Religion."
“Pilgrimage also provides a wonderful way of understanding religious
impulses as they are expressed in different world faiths,” Jenkins said.
“So we are dealing with something richly educational, something that
provides a unique way of understanding different religious traditions,
but it’s also breathtaking in terms of the beautiful places and
buildings that will be explored.”

Floor Tiles Found from Herod's Temple
According to The Times of Israel, floor tiles found in the Temple Mount are believed to have decorated the Second Temple in Jerusalem. In 2004 operations began to recover artifacts from the tens of thousands of tons of dirt dumped outside the Old City. The Temple Mount Sifting Project has found over 600 colored stone fragments that the organization's director believes came from the temple built by King Herod.
“This represents the first time that archaeologists have been able to
successfully restore an element from the Herodian Second Temple
complex,” Zachi Dvira, co-founder and director of the Temple Mount
Sifting Project, said.

Elkin at the Cardo in the Jewish Quarter according to Micahel Zeff of Ynet News.
"The project, 'Jerusalem of Mosaics,' is another step in branding the
Jewish Quarter as a location that tells a story," said Itay Bezalel,
CEO of the Jewish Quarter Restoration and Development Company.
Each of the unique mosaics tells a story, creating a contrast between the past and the present. The art in Jerusalem is just one of many reasons why it is such a tourist attraction. To Wail or Not to Wail
Today's blog features a special article written by Emilie Callan of Salt + Light Media that brings new light to the Wailing Wall, a must-see site in the Holy Land. Callan explores the history of the wall, its significance to the Jewish faith and the reasons behind why it's such an important historical and religious structure.
Callan closes with, "When Pope Francis went to Israel in 2014, he made a powerful gesture in
front of the Western Wall. He was accompanied by close friends he met as
a bishop in Argentina: a Rabbi and a Muslim professor. After praying at
the Wall, he embraced them and later on stressed the need for mutual
respect and love between people of all faiths, working for “peace and
justice”, and treating everyone as brothers and sisters. He also left a
note wedged between the stones of the Wall – a common practice among
pilgrims – on which he wrote the Our Father, a daily prayer reminding us
that God is active in our life right now, giving us everything we need
to overcome the struggles of the day-to-day. Overcoming division, then,
happens in just that, the day-to-day. It happens between people and as
Pope Francis perfectly summed up, “Before the mystery of God we are all
poor”.

Holy Land can still produce ancient treasures, thousands of years after

What is Cuban Art?
"There is an ethical asymmetry in the art that has emerged out of Cuba in the last several generations. The yen of that asymmetry is yoked to generations of Cubans' writhing under communism's lash, and the yang is the immense creativity unleased by that monolithic paradigm's fantastical ability to produce endless scarcity in the face of abundance." - Simons Chase

Daily Life In Ancient Israel
Interested in what life was like for the tribes of Israel during the time of the Biblical Judges (1200-1000 B.C.E)? In the Bible History Daily article, "Daily Life In Ancient Israel" you can find reliable information to answer all your questions.
"Israelites lived in nuclear households during the time of the Biblical
Judges, often with their relatives in clusters of houses around a common
courtyard. Houses were made of mudbrick with a stone foundation and
perhaps a second story of wood. The living space of the houses consisted
of three or four rooms, often with sleeping space on the roof or in a
covered roof loft." - Bible History Daily Staff Writer

Jews Revive Annual Pilgrimage to Africa's Oldest Synagogue
Abrams Travel is a full-service, luxury travel agency that specializes in tours and travel services for individuals, groups, synagogues and organizations. Located in Maryland, Abrams Travel has planned experiences to destinations including Israel, Egypt, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean to name a few.
Today's blog features the Reuters published article that highlights the revival of one of Judaism's annual pilgrimages in one of Africa's oldest synagogues. Guarded by armed Tunisian police, Jewish revelers chant and dance in a three-day pilgrimage to the El Ghriba synagogue. The 2011 celebration was cancelled due to the fall of former Tunis president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and then in 2012 only a few Jews were in attendance out of fear of possible attacks by hardline Islamists.
Perez Trabelsi, head of the Jewish community in the Tunisian island, Djerba, hopes that every year this celebration continues to grow in attendance due to the strong presence of security. "We are here to send a message of peace and tolerance embracing everyone," said a Tunisian woman named Zahayra Lakhel, putting on a Jewish head scarf before she entered the synagogue.
